This is a common phrase we hear in the Software Support department. It becomes more urgent as we get later in the month. There are many things that can happen during the month that will throw your bank balance off and can be difficult to pinpoint. We try to offer as much assistance as possible but can only do so much to help. So, here are some helpful tips to follow when trying to find your difference.

1. Check the bank statement balance from the previous month against the beginning bank statement balance on the bank statement for the current month. Sometimes the bank makes a mistake!
2. Check the YTD GL bank balance per books on the previous month's Bank Reconciliation Final Report against the beginning balance for cash in bank for the current month on the GL Detail Report. This may be different because something was posted after you did the bank reconciliation for the previous month. This entry will need to be cleared if it cleared your bank statement, or showing in an outstanding balance if it did not.
3. Look for Voided Check Journals that were posted in the month after the one you are reconciling. If the check being voided was written in the next month, no adjustment is necessary. If the check that is being voided was written in the month you are reconciling or earlier, you will need to do a negative adjustment using the check number and the amount of the check.
4. Look at the Adjustments, Deposit in transit, Receipts not recorded from last month’s final bank reconciliation. Anything not addressed this month needs to be brought forward again.
